which sewing machine is best for domestic use?
I need a sewing machine and I’m lost in the brands, what do you recommend for a sewing machine which has features like one step buttonholes or can sew all the heavy fabrics like jean hems, and between two brands of janome and which one is better? thank you so much.
If you’re looking to spend a lot of money, Babylock is the best. Janome would also be very good. You can’t go wrong with either. I have found through experience that although Singer has some better features on the embroidery machines, they tear up easier than Brother machines. The Brother machines have more features for less money and are more durable than most Singers unless you’re spending a great amount of money. I have a $3,000 Singer embroidery machine and a $200 Brother sewing machine. I prefer the Brother for sewing and it has more stitch functions. I’ve seen a Brother recently at Wal-Mart for a little over $150 and it’s a Project Runway Edition. It has push butting stitch selector instead of dial, drop in bobbin, needle threader, and really nice decorative and heirloom stitches. Makes me want to sell mine to buy that one. lol It would handle denim no problem as long as you’re using the right needle size, thread and a high tension (around 6-9 depending on machine/thread/fabric). P.S. If you’re wanting to turn your denim over several times for a factory hem or seam that won’t unravel, you need an industrial machine and serger. That’s thousands of dollars that isn’t necessary. Cut out your fabric with pinking shears to prevent unraveling and just fold your hem over once, maybe twice on denim and you’ll save big time! If it’s just a simple repair on a hem, there are hot glue guns and flexible, washable adhesives out there so you don’t have to sew it by hand with an upholstry needle.
