What are some good older Industrial Sewing Machines?
I would like to venture into the art of upholstery mostly in furniture, and automotive upholstery. I would also like to try to make shoes and i was wondering what someone could recommend as a good brand to look out for that could handle these tasks, i would like to buy an older machine and be able to keep my costs down. I frequent estate sales and would think i might be able to find one if i wait long enough or maybe i can get one off of Craigslist.

The difference between industrial and home sewing often boils down to equipment. In industry, we have a product in mind and look for specific equipment to sew it. In home sewing, you buy a machine and use it for any number of things. In other words and knowing what I do about upholstery and shoes, you won’t be able to use the same machine for them both. For some operations yes but not all.
For both you will need a walking foot; it’s a compound feed (meaning two or more types of feed). Chandlers are good machines if not a bit clunky compared to modern machines. The shoes will need other specialized equipment to finish them, on the order of post beds etc. Good luck!
