Stitch Sewing Machine

I cannot get the bobbin to wind properly on the prolextrix 8 stitch sewing machine?
The cotton doesn’t seem to have a way to feed up and down the bobbin and it doesn’t have a way of tensioning. Have they really sold me a machine that cannot work?
It’s barely viable in terms of a working machine from the one I saw. I believe the bobbin is supposed to be wound like this: http://www.sewusa.com/Threading_Diagrams/Threading_Pages/Brother_Sewing_Machine_Threading/brother_VX_1010_1020_threading_diagram.htm
Most modern machines do not have a level winder for the bobbins like the old long bobbin machines had. They fill without one.
