Singer Sewing Foot
Why does my thread break when I meander with my Singer 401A sewing machine?
I have a Singer 401A, the machine is in great shape. It sews well using a walking foot and any other application. I have the original darning foot to use for meandering. (I am new to meandering) When I meander, the thread breaks consistently!
I have tried to loosen the tension, change needles, swith from fine to a larger stitch…. I was using a rayon/cotton thread, sewing flannel with cotton batting. Do you suppose it was the thread? Any help would be appreciated.
It is the top thread that breaks, like it shreads coming out of the tension. The only time it happens is when I meander. I have done everything the manual suggests.
Rayon is a relatively weak thread, so that may be part of the issue. You may also have a sharp spot along the thread path (try a piece of pantyhose nylon or silk to “feel” with). Are you dropping the feed dogs? Have you tried meandering with poly thread (btw, there are some poly embroidery threads with the sheen of rayon). Also, are you using a needle with eye big enough for the thread, like a quilter or topstitcher?
Something that is sometimes useful in diagnosing an issue like this: get a sharpie, thread up, and make one mark at the first eyelet, two at the tension, three at the takeup lever, four at the
needle. Stitch and watch where it breaks. Repeat the process several times… if you’re getting breaks in approximately the same spot each time, you’ve got a spot to start looking.
