Sewing Machine Threads

sewing machine threads
What is the difference between sewing machine thread and normal hand-sewing thread?

Most folks use the standard “dressmaker thread” on spools for both machine and hand sewing — it’s really a machine twist thread. And the major differences between the two are S vs. Z twist.

Sewing machines use Z twist thread, and all threads produced for the home sewing market are Z twist. If you’re right handed and sew with Z twist thread, you tend to put a little more twist in the thread as you stitch, and the thread tends to knot up as you work. You can drop the needle and let the thread spin free and it will untwist itself and you can keep working. Or you can teach yourself to slightly roll the needle with each stitch to correct the problem as it happens. Hand quilting threads (at least all I’ve examined) are also Z twist threads with a glaze added to help the thread pull through layers of fabric and batting more easily.

There are some S twist threads around, primarily in embroidery threads. Perle cotton is S twist, for instance.
