Sewing Machine Repair Books

sewing machine repair books
Does anyone know of any good instructional websites or books for DIY clothes making?!?!?!?

So I have sewn a lot of things, ive repaired clothing for people, adjusted hems on friends clothing. But i have never taken the time and effort to attempt making my own clothing. Probably because i was scared i would fail miserably lol. I have made drawings of mini skirts and dresses and i am finally ready to try it out. Im good with a sewing machine, and hand sewing but what im looking for is a good instructional book that gives step by step instructions with illustrations. Things like making pleated mini skirts (Because im a pre-op transsexual) and things like dresses, and possibly even shirt. Looking for new hobbies so i spend less time online btw!

The best way to learn to sew is to buy patterns (Burda, McCalls, Simplicity, etc.) at a fabric shop. Every pattern contains a detailed set of instruction sheets with step-by-step information and illustrations for making the garment and for all the specialized techniques involved, from laying out the cutting pattern to finishing the hems. You should browse the pattern catalogs in the stores (not on-line because there is a much greater selection in the shops) and look for patterns for designs you like that are marked “Easy” or “Beginner.” Most fabric shops have a comfortable area where you can sit and page through the catalogs and then you can find the ones you want in the filing bins. The pattern catalogs also have detailed sizing charts so measure yourself and write down all the dimensions (around chest, waist and hips, length of arm from neck to wrist, back of neck down to waist). Almost all patterns nowadays have multiple sizes in each package so you will be able to customize when you cut it anyway.

A basic skirt or simple shirt are both good projects to start with. I would hold off on the pleated skirt until you have a higher comfort level with the sewing process. Start with non-stretchy, tightly woven fabrics (stretchy and silky fabrics are difficult for beginners), avoiding stripes or plaids until you have more experience. You’ll quickly figure out how to customize the basic patterns with your own ideas.

I learned to sew my own clothes starting when I was about 10 years old with the help of patterns. I’m sure it will work for you.
