Sewing Machine Problems

sewing machine problems
How do you identify and correct tension problems on a sewing machine?

I have a textiles exam tomorrow and i have no idea what the answer to this question is (its on my revision check list). I can’t find it on bite size anywhere. and i have no idea what tension problems even are. please help me. i would be very thankful :) and also what safety checks should you make before using a sewing machine

The thread tension on a sewing machine should be even. When you sew out a stitch the bottom thread and the top thread should lock together evenly between the pieces of fabric.

See: http://www.sewusa.com/Sewing_Machine_Repair/Thread_Tension_Settings.htm

If the top thread is too tight the bottom thread will loop up to the top. If the top thread is too loose, the upper thread loops to the bottom. (See above link for diagrams.)

If the tension is correct, the fabric will lay flat. If it is too tight the fabric will gather and/or become wavy, if it is too loose the thread will easily pull out.

**Tension problems occur when lint gets caught within the tension disks either on the upper thread or the bobbin.
**Tension problems occur when the machine is threaded improperly — thread is not placed within the tensions but lay on the outside of the tensions.
**Tension problems occur with bad needles (dull or barbed).
**Tension problems occur when different weights of threads are used. For example a thicker thread in the bobbin and a thinner thread in the upper. The tension will need to be adjusted to accommodate for the two sizes.

Here is a link to a safety guide for sewing machines that seems to cover everything you might need to know for your test.
