Metal Sewing Machines

Is anyone an expert on oldish all metal machines?
I’m looking for sewing machine advise. I want to buy an all metal, industrial strength sewing machine with, lots of power, high foot lift and zig zag.
There are so many choices!
Any recommendations? Brands to stay away from? How much power does the motor need? Inboard or back mounted motor?
How old is too old? How new is too new?
Any help will be greatly apreciated.

I recently bought an old Singer Industrial machine that is back board mounted, and runs on 110 V. It’s over 56 years of age but runs beautifully. I’d definitely look into purchasing an old industrial Singer. I once had an Industrial strength Singer that worked by a treadle! The beauty about the old metal machines is that it can be fixed pretty easily. Maintenance is relatively straight forward, just remember to oil the little beastie. My industrial strength machine will sew through 4 layers of very thick leather, it also has a walking foot to balance out the feed dogs. I heartily recommend Singer because they were one of the 1st ones to come out with an Industrial strength machine, and they were king.
Now your desire for a zig-zag stitch might require you to look at something newer. Usually, a zig-zag stitch would be required if you are working with knits; are you planning to sew on this type of fabric? Maybe a machine made in the 70′s would suit your needs for that stitch.. Singer started to use plastic in the 70′s, so I’m not sure if you’ll find an all metal one in that time period. A Juki might be another option, they have been in the industrial sewing business awhile also.
Whatever industrial strength machine you buy, you want to be sure there will be support when you need it. (Actually, I usually rebuild my older machines myself.)
Best of luck to you.
