Learn To Sew

How hard would it be to learn to sew clothes to start a business?
I am an unemployed graduate. Simply cant get a job. I was thinking of sewing vintage style clothes or something and sell them. I am basically completely unskilled at sewing. Is this something I could realistically learn to do?
You are definitely on the right track–thinking “entrepreneurship.” Pinning your business plan to a skill you do not have could be a drawback, though.
Can you learn to sew? Well, why don’t you sign up for classes and find out? If there’s a Viking, Bernina, or Pfaff dealer nearby, they probably offer lessons. Or your local community college or Vo-Tech school will offer lessons. Once you have completed a series of lessons, you will know more about your ability to develop salable skills–and whether you enjoy it enough to pursue those skills.
Can you run a business? Again, you’ll need more information than you currently have. Possibilities: Sign up for entrepreneur classes at the local community college, vo-tech school, or Small Business Administration’s outreach. While you’re studying what everyone needs to know before and after starting a business, you might try to get a job (part-time, full-time, or volunteer) in a related business so you can absorb knowledge and skills that will be helpful later.
Can you write a business plan? The classes will help. Meanwhile, you’ll need to be thinking about the questions you need to answer before opening for business and well before going to a bank to borrow financing. Who will my customers be? How will I find them? How much money will it take to buy the stock, equipment, materials, and supplies I need to get started? How much will rent cost? utilities? assistants? cleaning? advertising? How will I price my product/services? Have I done the research to pinpoint good (and bad) locations? How much in sales will I need to break even the first year? How long until I turn a profit? What profit can I expect at the end of the first year? third year? fifth year?
