Kenmore Sewing Machine Feet

Sewing maching question?
Hi. I have a fairly inexpensive sewing machine (Kenmore) and really don’t know what I’m doing, but I am trying to make some pillows. The problem is that with my two pieces of fabric and the trim, the piece is too thick to fit under the presser foot. I can see no way to raise the foot up any higher than it is. Can you sew something without the foot? Any other advice.
mom says to sew the one piece of fabric with the trim then lay the second piece of fabric then sew again
the first sewing will flatten the trim and the fabric thinner than before
so with the addition of the second piece of fabric it should fit under the foot
