Japanese Sewing Machine

A a good sewing machine for beginners?
I love my sister and she asked me for a sewing machine for christmas, now usually I wouldn’t care what she ask for and just get it, but since now I have my boyfriend’s family to give presents to, I cant spend as much money as I usually would spend on her.
She now wants to learn how to use a sewing machine and I had supported her through her knitting phase, her harmonica phase, her guitar one, her learning japanese and all those phases she has gone through. I don’t want to give her another present that is going to end up collecting dust at a corner of her house, I have been looking at sewing machine at Sears etc and they are all around $140 to $200, what is a good and cheap (I dont think she needs the cadillac of sewing machines) that I can give her? Hopefully one that is going to last but not one that is good enough for a professional?
Thank you all!
Go to your local sew and vac repair shop or an independent dealer who have used machines for sale. They get them in on trade and refurbish them and put them up for re-sale. Tell them what you are looking for and for what type of sewing your sis plans to do. You should be able to pick a nice looking machine, maybe not too complicated, and the price within reason for what your budget will allow.
Make sure the machine has a manual, some extra feet, the normal accessories (will be listed in the manual, usually), the control pedal and power cord if separate. Some will have a cover or case or come in a cabinet. They should give instructions to your sister if needed.
They should have a 6 mos. to 1 year guarantee on what they sell. Some will allow for trading up if you start with a more basic machine and have bought from them. My local guy does and I bought three machines from him, including a serger.
Some of these places will have sewing classes. That means customer interaction and is definitely a plus when buying a machine.
FWIW, get a machine, tell her you will Lend it to her, and when it starts to gather dust, you will take it back. When it hits her closet or goes under a pile of junk, go get it. That way you can always sell it in your local Pennysaver or on Craigslist if you can’t use it yourself.
A good brand used machine generally will have better resale value than a newer, cheap plastic machine from a discount store.
