Janome Embroidery Foot

Can you do free Embroidery with Janome J1012 sewing machine?

I havea janome J1012 sewing machine and i would like to use it to do some free embroidery but i am not sure how to make the teeth under the foot to go down or how to go about doing the free embroidery. Any help would be appreciated.

Are you talking about free motion embroidery? You can do that with any sewing machine, even an old treadle straight stitcher. Check the manual to find out if you can drop the feed dogs. If you can’t, you’ll have to cover them — a piece of thin plastic with a hole punched for the needle will do if there is no “official” darning plate. Set the stitch length to 0. You’ll want some sort of darning foot, too.

One of the better books on free motion embroidery is now out of print: Robbie and Tony Fanning’s Complete Book of Machine Embroidery: http://www.amazon.com/Complete-Book-Machine-Embroidery-Creative/dp/0801976480/ref=sr_1_8?ie=UTF8&qid=1288052646&sr=8-8
