Embroidery Machine Needle

I need some help with tension problems on my sewing machine.?
I have been sewing for over 50 years but just got a new computerized Brother machine. It has an embroidery attachment and I love it. Have already used that feature alot. But..when I try to do regular sewing the fabric puckers up. i have tried to reset the tension several different ways, removed and replaced the bobbin, changed needles etc. The stitches look ok from the top and the bottom, but everything puckers. Do I have to use different thread than what am used to? Just good old Coats and Clark.
Are you hanging on to the thread ends when you start the seam? Are the feed dogs moving the fabric easily? What’s the upper tension set on? Is the clamping pressure on the presser foot too high or too low? If you sew two plies, do they come out the same length, or is the bottom one much shorter?
Sorry I don’t have any solid answers for you, but if none of those worked, I’d probably start by marking the top and bottom threads with a felt pen at regular intervals, like 2″ or so, then wind the bobbin and top thread back up onto the spool and bobbin. Thread up again, and pull out the top and bobbin threads and match the dots on the two threads. Then sew something and see if you can spot problems that way.
