Domestic Sewing Machines
What’s better? New domestic sewing machine or old industrial?
Looking to make a dress part time as a hobby type thing. What would be better for me? An old industrial sewing machine or a new one (aimed at domestic purposes) out of the box?
For a hobby dressmaker an industrial is not appropriate. As mentioned they do only one or two stitches, their purpose is to sew fast. My industrials sew at 1400 stitches per minute and it took a while for me to adapt to that high speed. A new domestic machine that has a variety of stitches for different purposes is a far wiser investment. Different aspects of garment construction require special stitches and many special fabrics require special stitches, which domestic machines will have built in. For special techniques and fabrics you need sepeerate industrial machines, which are big and heavy and take a lot of space, while one domestic machine is small and fits in anywhere. Many industrials don’t do button holes, all domestics will do buttonholes. For dressmaking, that tips the scales in favour of a domestic household machine. Go with a good versatile domestic machine with plenty of built in stitches.
