Coverstitch Machines
Sewing patterns don’t tell me when to use my serger!?
I recently invested in a nice burnina sewing machine and serger. The surger has coverstitch, but I don’t know how to use that yet.. anyways, when reading patterns, they don’t tell me when I should serge the seams- before or after I sew them? and what spots should I serge the 2 pieces of fabric together and press them to a certain side, and what spots should i serge the 2 pieces separately and press them open? Hope this makes sense! Thank you for your answers!
Commercial patterns don’t assume you’ll use a serger.
You can technically serge either before or after. Part of it will depend on your fabric. If you’re using a particularly slimy or lightweight fabric, serging first can stretch it out. I find it easier to serge first (unless my fabric sucks). If you serge after you sew the seam, make sure you serge as you go and not after you’ve put the whole garment together, and really make sure you’re careful when serging a sewn seam not to let the rest of the garment get caught under the needle or under the knife.
As for the together or separate, You’re probably ok serging them together if A) your fabric is loosely woven and the serging wants to pull out or B) it’s a seam you dont’ plan on altering, as it’s no fun to seam rip serging.
And – serging can give you a nasty ridge on the right side of the fabric after you press, so test it first and if it’s giving you a ridge, you can fix the problem by inserting a piece of brown paper between the seam and the garment before you press it and it’ll keep the ridges from showing.
