My Brother xl-2600i is not sewing a zigzag stitch?

I set the stitch selector thing to a zigzag stitch, but when I sew on my fabric, it either sews a straight stitch or this stitch that sew three times (I don’t know what it’s called). It just doesn’t sew a zigzag stitch or any other stitches besides the two that I mentioned. I’m a beginner at this (I’m 15) and I got this sewing machine for Christmas. I’m trying to learn it now since I have free time, but it’s furstrating me. I’ve tried searching for something in the manual that might help me with this problem, and I found nothing. It just said to sew a zigzag stitch, I have to turn the stitch dial to the zigzag stitch selection and sew normally. Please help?

First, unthread the machine and put a piece of paper under the presser foot and sew on paper. Do you get a zigzag pattern of holes, or do you just get a straight line of perforations. If you get just a straight line of perforations, does it change when the stitch width selection is increased?
