Brother Sewing Machine Cs6000i

Can someone help with sewing with elastic thread? I can’t get mine to gather/shir the fabric?

I have a brother cs6000i machine and I have been trying to sew with elastic thread lately but my machine will not gather the fabric. I have tried winding the bobbin with no tension and with slight tension, I have tried different tensions on my actual machine, I have tried stitch lengths between 4 and 5, I have tried different fabrics, I have tried with the elastic thread threading into the bobbin channel and then again with it out, and I have tried ironing the fabric with steam after sewing but it all comes out similar, and not at all gathered. Can someone please help!

If I’m doing elastic thread shirring, I wind the elastic thread on the bobbin with very very slight tension, then stitch with a long stitch (usually about 5 mm, 5 stitches per inch), and multiple rows. Then I steam (not iron, just hit the shirring with a heavy steam) from an iron held about 1/2″ above the fabric. This is a good method for lightweight, soft fabrics, but won’t work on a fabric with a lot of body like those typically used for pants.

Another method you may want to try is to use regular dressmaker weight top and bobbin threads, a twin needle and run either elastic thread or elastic cord either through a hole in your needleplate or a piece of coffee stirrer straw taped down just in front of the presser foot. As you stitch, you’ll get two parallel lines of straight stitching, with the bobbin thread zig-zagging over the elastic thread or cord. Pull on the cord ends to tighten. This works much better than the elastic thread shirring above if you’re working with a medium weight fabric like pincord or the like.
