Brother Serger Machines
Where can I get a cheaper replacement upper knife for a brother 1034D serger?
I am only finding them around $25. That is 25% of the total cost I paid for the machine!
I would love just to clean it but I snapped it on a hidden pin!
A couple of things to try:
1) wipe the cutting surfaces of both blades with rubbing alcohol or unflavored vodka on a clean cotton cloth. There’s a coating that builds up after awhile that makes knives (and scissors!) feel “unsharp”. Clean it off and often the cutting edge is miraculously “sharpened”.
2) Reset the knife blades according to the manual. Vibration can knock them out of alignment enough that you get strange cutting.
3) place a single thread across the lower blade and use the handwheel to go through a stitch cycle. If the thread is cut, instead of pushed along the surface, the knife is sharp.
Yes, the blades on this machine are spendy. Call the local repair shops and see if they can do better for you on a replacement price — but I rather doubt it. The lower knife on my old Pfaff was only about $3, but I wound up changing it fairly often as it dulled quickly (a fairly mild steel). The upper blade never did need changing.
