Why is my sewing machine doing this?
I have a brother cs-6000i sewing machine. When I sew with thinner fabrics, the thread is tight and the fabric gathers on it. When I finish a seam before cutting the thread, I have to pull the fabric straight to correct this. Like opening a drawstring bag..
When I use heavier fabrics, it is not as bad, but the thread is still tight. It does not gather like lighter fabrics.
Any advice or information is appreciated.
Sounds like you have two problems here: the first is tension. LOOK at the sewn seam and adjust whichever thread (top or bobbin – look in the manual for how) is too tight. The other is probably foot pressure: lighter fabrics need lighter pressure on the presser foot, so that may also need to be adjusted. Again, the manual is your friend.
You may also find that you are using too heavy a needle and thread for light weight fabrics. For very light fabrics like lawn and organza, you need a size 70 or even a 60 needle and thinner thread. For poly and poly mix fabrics, try 120′s weight poly thread (overlocker/serger weight thread rather than standard Gutterman type poly thread), for cotton fabrics try a 100 weight cotton like Aurifil, and for light weight silks use a 100 weight silk thread like the one produced by YLI.
